It’s a long way from those Magnum ice cream commercials.

Karl Lagerfeld, who seems to do as much directing as designing these days, has a new film project that he’s set to unveil May 9 with his 2011 Chanel cruise collection in Cap d’Antibes.

The Tale of a Fairy is a 30-minute short film starring actress Anna Mouglalis, silver-haired supermodel Kristen McMenamy, perpetual Lagerfeld muse Lady Amanda Harlech, model Mark Vanderloo, and Lagerfeld’s right-hand man, Baptiste Giabiconi (who’s also in those ice cream ads).

In the role of the titular fairy? Freja Beha Erichsen, who appears on the scene topless and quite androgynous (she later shares a kiss with Mouglalis).

“Fairies are neither boy nor girl,” an actor says in voice-over in the preview. (This isn’t the first time Lagerfeld’s played with the model’s androgyny—for his Spring 2010 collection, Erichsen and Giabiconi closed the show in matching ensembles, with Lara Stone as their female counterpart.)

The full film will appear on  Chanel’s Web site next week, but you can check out the sneak peek above.
