Michelle Williams on Interview's May cover

Goodbye, fashion house; hello, Little House!

Though she sports retro styles from the likes of Chanel, Bottega Veneta, and Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière in the May issue of Interview, Michelle Williams much prefers the prairie attire she dons in the mid-1800s drama Meek’s Cutoff.

“The dresses … I miss that,” the cover star, looking ethereal in a platinum pixie, barely there brows, and a cable-knit turtleneck, says of the heavy ensembles she wore to play a pioneer woman who travels through Oregon in a covered wagon. “They were ingenious for so many reasons. They actually do keep you quite cool, because they’re cotton, and they also provide cover. Privacy is important to women, and when you’re on the trail like that, so little is afforded.”

Another perk of the dresses?

“You can actually go to the bathroom in private. It provides an incredible shield,” she says. “You could literally be in a conversation with somebody and just sort of drop down.”

Mercifully, Williams doesn't do that in her haunting Mikael Jansson–photographed Interview shoot, which includes images of the crop-topped star standing in the woods in a ’40s inspired, dark Fendi dress with a frilly white Louis Vuitton dickie, and posing against a stark white wall in a pale blue, ’60s-style, pleated Prada minidress with white Falke socks and black patent Louis Vuitton mary janes.

All that seems to be missing is a bonnet, which Williams became a fan of while filming Meek’s Cutoff.

“It’s like wearing blinders, really,” she says of the head wear. “[Co-star] Zoe Kazan and I became close during the movie, and we missed our bonnets.”

After filming wrapped, however, the duo decided to buy their own.

“We’ve been threatening each other to wear them in Brooklyn,” says Williams, “but so far neither of us have been bold enough to break them out.”

Hey, there’s always next Easter …
