OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Wang proves longevity through versatility

Alexander Wang made his name dressing downtown’s darlings, but his steady inching toward a more grown-up feel took center stage with his effort for Fall. Wang’s typical motifs were all present: menswear touches, an athletic minimalism, and certainly that urban gloss that’s made him a downtown darling all his own.

But everything appeared more polished than expected—what could have been a plain white maxi tank dress from his T line floated ethereally behind its model thanks to a light fabric and a hem with a circumference that bubbled like a cloud. And menswear-inspired button-downs were sheer and light with volume thanks to just the right fabric choice.

Not that Wang’s signature spins weren’t there. Otherwise serious coats (of which there were many) flickered with a pop of lime from wide, football-size pockets or gave flashes of zipper details that we hope were more than just gratuitous hardware. One coat, in soft gray, had a hood lined with such a thick ribbing that you instantly remembered exactly whose show you were watching.

Wang seems to be meditating on the perfect degree at which to balance his young urban customer’s current wants with what she’ll want to wear five or ten years from now. There was a softness to his signature toughness that customers of all ages could appreciate, and most of the pieces could be styled a million ways.

Clearly Wang is thinking about his future. After all, Mr. T-shirt did wear a proper button-down to take his bow.
