OVERALL TAKEAWAY: A smartly concise début with a touch of dark edge

Nary Manivong made a name for himself with his eponymous line launched in 2009. But for Fall 2011, he upped the buzz factor by teaming with fashion progeny Ally Hilfiger for a brand-new collection called NAHM (the Nary Manivong line is currently "on hold," he says).

The collection was centered around the concept of adding shirting details to dresses and was inspired by the raven—both the bird and the Edgar Allan Poe poem. The 20-ish-piece lineup was kept smartly simple and concise in black, mustard, and rich orange shades.

The shirtdress may have been the starting point, but the silhouettes varied from a long, pleated strapless dress to sheer-yoke minis, some with shirt and button details. And while the vaguely goth pieces might be best suited for contemporary sales floors (points of sale have yet to be determined), one floor-length, long-sleeve mustard gown with black button detailing is chic enough for the designer set.

The duo's Milk Studios presentation may have been packed, but it remains to be seen whether Manivong and Hilfiger can last past their début buzz.
