OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Gurung pushed himself with a wide-ranging collection that encompassed a little something for everyone.

Awards show season is driving on, and celebrity stylists would be remiss to overlook Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2012 collection. Case in point: Joan Smalls, look 28. A black tulle gown hand-embroidered with filigree cutwork, jet beads, and onyx crystals was practically begging for some pretty young thing with mile-long legs to pick it. But while Gurung can create a red carpet show-stopper with the best of ‘em, his Fall 2011 collection had plenty more than a gorgeous gown (or several).

He opened with a series of all-black looks with fetishistic touches like glossy black patent leather and Philip Treacy-designed caps, then segued into something a bit sportier with a metallic brocade varsity jacket and neoprene sweatshirts embellished with beads and vinyl roses. Gurung’s print of choice this season was a vibrant blue “liquefied rose” print, which appeared in both cocktail-worthy frocks (often finished with cascading ruffles) and trim little suits with a flared pant. And in addition to the aforementioned look 28, the designer’s closing stretch offered liquid gold gowns and ivory evening options adorned with gold beading, crystal roses, sequins, and even ostrich feathers.

If there’s a criticism to be made, it’s that Gurung’s complete collection seemed at times like a series of separate collections. But then again, doesn’t that just mean there’s more for us to love?
