Sixties glamour strikes again, this time at the 2011 Oscars.

Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon both worked retro ponytails with major volume at the crown. Kidman’s teased version was the subtler of the two—her hairstylist David Babaii wanted to create a “playful ponytail” à la Brigitte Bardot. Witherspoon’s cascading high pony was as perky as Elle Woods, but it had a major Fembot influence.

Sharon Stone was also doing the ’60s thing, working a bouffant that skyrocketed at least six inches above her head. It was part Mars Attacks, part Hitchcock ice queen.

Not everyone went big-big-big, though: It’s reported that Michelle Williams’s pale blonde pixie, created by Chris McMillan, was inspired by Breathless star Jean Seberg.
