Spring 2013 Beauty Trend: Messy Braids

Looks from Mulberry, Emerson and Tory Burch.

From fishtails at Tory Burch to twisted knots at Mulberry, the messy braid is taking over for Spring 2013.

With straight, silky strands and blunt bangs reserved for the polished pea coat-and-scarf days of fall and winter, spring hair looks a little more beachy and playful, with loose locks, plenty of flyaways and funky unkept braided updos.

Soft, pulled-apart fishtail braids complemented the boho-preppy vibe of Tory's travel-inspired collection. The models had two messy, unraveling braids, one was hanging straight down the back and one casually draped to the front of the shoulder. Hair stylelist Eugene Souleiman for Wella said, "I wanted it to feel very loose and textured, almost like wheat. I wanted to see the little imperfections — there’s a sensuality to it."

With its Fashion Week debut, Emerson showcased punky, thick, fluffy, exaggerated milkmaid braids that were wrapped around like a headscarf, embodying the free-spirited modern woman of the luxuriously-eccentric up-and-coming Emerson label.

The youthful braided looks continued at Honor and Jason Wu, where girls rocked tighter, twisted updos, but braids didn't stop in the states. Over in London, plenty of brands hopped on the braid bandwagon.

Mulberry ladies sported a few tiny braids intertwined within an untidy pony-bun for a laid-back look of whimsy and Kinder Aggugini showed a big, loose braid-ponytail hybrid tied with elastics for a casual, mussed-up appearance.
