State Dinner brings Canadian Fashion To the Table!

Today marked the end of an epic 3 day trip to the United States by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. A climate pledge was announced, a few important events were attended, but what has everyone talking about is the State Dinner held at the White House Thursday evening – and especially the fashions worn by Michelle Obama and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau!
Both first-ladies showed up in style to the State Dinner – only the 11th dinner the Obama Administration has hosted! Sophie Grégoire Trudeau wore a royal purple gown with orange bodice accents and a flowing train by Lucian Matis, a popular designer regularly seen during Toronto Fashion Week. Michelle Obama’s navy blue floral jacquard was also by a designer with Canadian roots – Jason Wu, the popular Canadian/Taiwanese designer, who previously made both of her inaugural gowns.
During this trip, Grégoire Trudeau sported clothing by other Canadian designers such as a floral jacket by Ellie May Studios, a white trouser suit by Duy Nguyen, and another Lucian Matis piece – a red and pink floral sheath. Her State Dinner outfit was completed with Canadian designer pieces – Zvelle shoes by Elle AyoubZadeh and an Ela bag by Ela Kowalewska.
Honoured by her commitment to supporting Canadian fashion, the designers are gushing: “Sophie Trudeau wearing Lucian Matis twice in one day!” was just one of Mr. Matis’ posts on Facebook about the subject, while over on Instagram, Zvelle wrote: “Honoured to be a small part of this historic occasion.”
Guided by her stylist, Jessica Mulroney, Mrs. Grégoire Trudeau, who has been dubbed ‘the hottest first-lady in the world’ by The New York Post, is often compared to Kate Middleton, not only for her role in the fashionable spotlight, but because she has a famous mother-in-law to live up to (Justin’s Mother, Margaret Trudeau was a fashionable, cool first lady who hit up Studio 54, during the time she was married to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau).
Sophie Grégoire Fashions is the blog started by Mrs. Grégoire Trudeau to bring Canadian designers into the spotlight in the global market, so they won’t feel the need to move elsewhere to get the international notoriety they deserve.
A fashionable first-lady, especially one committed to bringing previously unnoticed talent into the spotlight, is someone worth following! We look forward to seeing what fashionable Sophie Grégoire Trudeau will show us next, and are inspired to keep a close eye on the designers showing during Toronto Fashion Week, held from March 14-18.
