OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Hear the name Paul Smith and you inevitably think of multicolored stripes. As such, it won't be any surprise to learn that, yes, stripes were a common theme of Sunday's Spring 2013 show.

This time around, the stripes were thicker and blockier, with vertical strokes of black, hunter green, and white running down a pair of trousers. There were also several visual tricks on the eye, with Smith breaking up diagonal stripes stretching across either side of a breezy maxidress, which, by the way, have 'drinks by the pool on your next vacay' written all over them.

Sticking to a palette of jazzed up primary and secondary colors—navy, hunter green, garnet, mustard yellow, etc.—Smith also had fun with proportion, pairing high-waisted trousers with a blouse with a drawstring detail at the waist, or a top whose top half featured color-blocking or a print. It was hard to see where things began and ended, an effect which had its origins in the work of fashion photographer Jean-Paul Goude. Whether the pieces will be styled as such once they leave the shop remains to be seen, but it certainly made for a visually arresting show.
