Overall Takeaway: For his debut Saint Laurent collection (he’s the one that made the decision to ditch the “Yves” back in June), it looks like Hedi Slimane called on his rock n’ roll roots to create an edgy collection in mostly black. Since his days at Dior, his work’s been admired by music legends like David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Then, while on hiatus from the fashion world, he created a name for himself as a photographer, snapping shots of Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse and British rocker Pete Doherty.
But while his artwork has featured some of the biggest names in contemporary music, Slimane’s spring collection is notably retro—the blouson blouses and wide-brim hats were more Carly Simon than Carly Rae Jepsen. There were also large neck bows, maxi dresses and capes with tassel details to hammer his retro vibe home.
If Slimane has had a brief love affair with photography and the music world, it’s clear that he now has his feet firmly planted in fashion. In a massive showing of industry support, fellow designers Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Alber Elbaz, as well as Vogue’s Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, all sat front row at the show.
