Launch Slideshow

SHOW: Salvatore Ferragamo, Spring 2013

THEME: Trench coat

ACCESSORIES: Over-the-knee leather sandal boots, laced-up pumps, strappy heels, gold chain bracelets and necklaces, leather hobo bags with gold hardware and studded portfolio bags.

OVERALL TAKEAWAY:  Massimiliano Giornetti, the creative director behind Salvatore Ferragamo, once told Esquire that he thinks of each fashion show as a "nine-minute movie." He added, "When I'm putting a collection together, I tend to think of a character..." For his latest ready-to-wear collection, which seemed to be built around a central trench coat theme, that character is a woman who's ready to brave the elements.

Could she be a secret agent? Or is she a movie star trekking across the world for premieres? Maybe she's an executive in Florence, the label's home base, just trying to make it to the office on a particularly blustery spring day. Whoever she is, she's certainly a woman on the move.

Of course there were actual trenches—in black with sleek leather lapels, a double-breasted version, a full-length white trench with button down flaps on the shoulders, and a cropped design in beige. But there were also other looks—dresses, skirts, and pants—that borrowed elements from the trench.

A frock in a khaki hue had the same belt, complete with metal grommets, as the coats. Another dress, made in white lace, maintained the structured look of outerwear, and while it had no belt, the skirt's crisscross folding seemed to mimic the look of a looped-over enclosure.

As for the shoes? It wouldn't be a Ferragamo show without fabulous accessories (the label actually began in footwear in the 1920s). There were lace-up pumps that were certainly drool-worthy, but the real showstoppers were the over-the-knee leather sandal boots, which came in black, white, tan, and brown.

As if the trench weren't enough, Giornetti made sure his character would be covered head-to-toe.
