OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Last season Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana delivered immaculate baroque frocks in black and gold lace. This time round, however, the duo jumped from the Renaissance period to a color-infused, Sicily-inspired collection with a '60s spin.
The Italian designers are no stranger to a bold print-hello, chili peppers-and here they've paid homage to Sicilian ceramic vases and historic puppet theater, with fiery red and orange gowns bearing images of armor-clad warriors, and quirky puppet heads skirting the edge of a platform heel.
Gunny sacks stamped with Sicilia have been transformed into dresses, which admittedly lacked the glam factor of the aforementioned printed gowns. Stripes, too, played a major role, with red, green, and black bars gracing sundresses, bra tops, and more. Paired with beachy silk headscarves and embellished platform heels, these summery looks recalled a younger Sophia Loren on the beach.
Despite its Sicilian influence, the collection had a slight tribal feel, no doubt due to the copious amount of raffia involved. A red raffia minidress with an embellished waist may not be the most comfortable outfit in the world, but when have we ever let that stop us?
