OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Modern day Francoise Hardys, meet your new favorite collection. Catherine Malandrino’s geometric and graphic-inspired collection is for nonchalant girls whose first zip codes were east of Madison but who have since moved their closets south of 14th. Uptown meets downtown, while American sportswear fuses perfectly with the typical French insouciance. Graphic cutout pants and skirts plus embellished vests and jackets provided a wearable lineup of day to night pieces. Mod was on Malandrino’s mind with the inclusion of white leather caps from Heidi Lee and geometrically-hung baubles and graphic collars. Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick come to mind, but to make those quick comparisons is to overlook the easy contemporary fit of the line. Stretch cotton jacquard, French cotton guipure, stretch leather, and suede ensured the quality is not to be overlooked. Malandrino has targeted a covetable overlap in demographic to fun but serious effect, and north-of-midtowners and Ludlow Street denizens alike will be snatching up the pieces. That’s not just our conjecture. The mixed crowd had to be commandeered away from hogging the space with their up-close-and-personal amateur photographic attempts. Snap away but move along for the others.
