Bettina's Take: Jack Rogers's New Life

How do you update a classic? A preppy staple? The go-to shoe that has graced the feet of several chic generations of posh women, from Palm Beach to Palm Springs?

You have to keep the soul (or sole, as the case may be) of the shoe and tweak it a little. Make it hipper. Don't compromise the quality. Keep the price reasonable (we're talking preppies here, and those who aspire to be). What do you get? A $157 snakeskin—snakeskin!—chic, easy-to-wear shoe.

The new Jack Rogers store has opened on New York's Upper East Side, and what a lovely store it is. Nathalie Kaplan of NGK Global Communications organized the opening cocktail, and it was packed.

Bill Smith, Marcia and Richard Mishaan, Nicole Miller, Lauren Dupont, and Claude Wasserstein all came to admire the new collection, which included brightly colored silk clutches with a gold embroidered paisley motif (great for gifts, too!), preppy ties with fun designs, accessories for the home, and long jackets.

I ran in before my Save Venice black tie, and I'm glad I did. Just thought I'd share.
